Focus on what you seek, not where you have been
Most job searches begin by asking, “What have you done?”
Your experience certainly matters, but your past should not define your next opportunity.
A resume tells employers where you have been; your job search should also tell them where you want to go.
The skills you have developed may be transferable to industries, roles, and career paths you have never considered before.
That is why we believe job seekers should start by defining where they want to go -
the type of work they want to do, the industry they want to enter,
the location or work environment they prefer, and the direction they want their career to take.
Specify job titles/locations you want and what type of job
We believe a job seeker should not have to explain their entire career before an employer can understand
what they are looking for. Start with something much simpler: the job titles you want and the locations
where you want to work. Those two pieces of information can provide a surprisingly powerful signal.
They tell an employer what kind of opportunity interests you and where you are prepared to pursue it.
The rest should be part of the conversation. Once an employer sees that your desired role
and location align with an opening, your experience, skills, accomplishments, and background
can be evaluated in the context of that opportunity.
By keeping the initial search focused on where you want to go rather than where you have been,
we give employers the opportunity to discover candidates based on their aspirations—not just their
job history.
